Aloha Wayne/David/Vincent and the rest of the Maui Ag Design Team
Your notes are an excellent representation of what was discussed. Just getting back from another set of meetings in Oregon and thought I would check in to see what’s transpired. Oregon is beautiful, by the way, but nothing compares to your island.
I would suggest that you add to the “Check List for Evaluating Business Ideas” with a sustainability index (e.g., score 1 – 5) – to rank the potential businesses according to ACDC values. For example, does the business support local farmers, build soil profile, address environmental concerns, and improve food security on the island. Does the business address a critical need? This kind of selection criteria will continue to support the overall mission statement for the program.
An important next step is to develop an action plan, i.e., a step by step plan for getting this beast off the ground. I’ve contacted the USDA, Beth Jones, with Rural Development and she is working to forward some links to future grant opportunities that may help, but there may also be some assistance with the County of Maui, to support the ACDC, since this whole concept is great for economic development and food security for the entire island. Sell the “multiplier effect” , food security, and the support for local farmers, all important issues that will resonant well with your county supervisors.
I’ll be in San Francisco this week, attending the Food Commons conference, I’ll keep you posted on anything useful from that event.
Best to you
Cindy
