Welcome to Maui Food Web!
We are constantly improving this site with your help and input. If you have a suggestion you can .
Although you can view the site without creating an account, you will get the most out of this website if you register. That way you can ask questions, post information and interact with the other members of Maui Food Web. There is no obligation and we never use your email except to occasionally (as in hardly ever) email you about the site. So go ahead and register now – you can always delete your account if you change your mind. Make sure that mauifoodweb.org is in your spam white list so the activation email reaches you.
Just Choose “Help” on the menu when you’ve registered and activated your account and it will bring you back here.
So now that you registered, got your email, and activated your registration by clicking the link, you are ready to start interacting.

See What’s Happening
Click Activity on the top menu to get the lastest events on Maui Food Web…somewhat like your status feed on Facebook.
Check Out the Other Members
Add them as a friend. If they accept, you’ll be able to communicate in even more ways. If you get notification that someone has requested to be friends with you, then login and click on “Notifications” at the very top (black bar) of the screen. That will take you to a page where, if you scroll down a little, you’ll see buttons to either accept or reject the friend request.
Once you are friends with someone you can send them private message. If you later decide you want to remove this person as a friend, simply go to MEMBERS and search for them. There will be a button labeled “Cancel Friendship”.
Please if you feel that someone is abusing the site by sending spam messages or inappropriate content.
Check Out the Forum Topics
Clicking on “Forum” on the top menu will list the most recent topics of discussion. You can click on the topic and add your 2 cents.
Events
Putting on an event that relates to the Maui Food Web? You can click on Events from the top menu and add your event to be displayed. Or you can check out the events that are already scheduled. You’ll see these summarized on the left hand side of each page, also. (More info on how to do this below)
Creating a Post
The easiest way to create a post is to just start typing in the box that shows up wherever you want your post to show when you are browsing. If you want to get fancy you can….
Create a News Item
A post will show up in News. To start with, put your cursor over “Dashboard” on the dark strip at the very top of the page. When you do that a menu will drop down with “New Post” as one of the choices. That’s the one you click on.
The first time you make a post, not all the post options will show. So click on “Screen Options” to make the list of options show up.
I recommend checking all the options except “Revisions”. Then click “Screen Options” again to make the choices disappear.
Write your title in the space for it and begin typing in your post. You can paste in material from documents or websites and if the “Visual” tab is the dark one (not “HTML”) it will paste in just like it appeared on the original.
There are lots of tools you can use
Most of these tools operate on text that you have highlighted. You won’t see the tools if scripts are disabled or if you have accidentally set your view on “HTML” (upper right corner of editing box). You want to set it to “Visual”.
Don’t worry about forgetting what each little icon means because you can just hover your cursor over it and a description will pop up.
Top row from left to right:
- B=bold,
- I=italic,
- strikeout,
- make a bullet list,
- make a numbered list,
- quote ,
- justify left,
- center,
- right,
- create a link (it will pop up a dialog to set the link url),
- break an existing link,
- check spelling,
- fullscreen,
- hide or show 2nd row of tools
Second row:
- choose paragraph or a variety of headings,
- underline,
- justify,
- set the color of the text,
- paste without formatting,
- paste from Word (gets rid of some of the junk that Word puts into your clipboard),
- remove formatting of the selected text,
- insert a special character,
- out dent,
- indent,
- undo,
- redo,
- help.
After you type in your post, you’ll need to publish it. Click on Publish on the far right side. If you make changes after you publish, this button will say “Update” and clicking it will revise your post.
Extra tips that will improve your post
Find these three enhancements on the right hand side of your dashboard screen (You’ll have to scroll down some)
Categories – Your post will automatically go into the “General” catagory unless you choose another catagory. You can create a new catagory for it if nothing fits. Don’t put it into events unless it IS and event – in which case you need to start over and choose “Events” from the menu on the left side of your dashboard.
Post Tags – you can add descriptive keywords to your post that will help users search for it. Look at the lower right side of the screen (scroll down)
Featured Image – Set this so that your chosen image will display when your post is listed as a featured post.
Password Protected – Want your post to be invisible to everyone except the few members that you give a password to? Then click on “Edit” that follows “Visibility: Public” in the upper right corner of the Edit Page. That will allow you to check “Password Protected” and enter any password you choose. Give that password to your friends along with the link to the page (you can see the link right under where you put the title. It is labeled “Permalink”) Then they will be able to see the post but people without the password will not see the post.
At any point in editing a post (or an event) you can click on the upper right hand tab labeled “Help”. To get rid of help just click the tab again (which will have moved down to the bottom of the help text)We do not disclose your information to third parties.
WordPress has created an in depth explanation of posting if you want to find out more. Or better yet, just experiment. Worst comes to worst, you can always “Move to Trash” (right next to the “Publish”/”Update” button) and start over.
Create An Event
An event is just a special type of post. You create an event by going to “Events” from any page of the website. At the top of post area, you’ll see an outlined button that says “Create an Event”. Other ways to create an event include: Click on “My Account” and “Events” on the top black bar of the website, or clicking on “Create New” under “Events” on the far left menu of the Dashboard. (If your far right menu seems to have turned into wordless icons, click on the little gray arrow between the first and second icons and it will expand to words.)
This is where you’ll need to be able to see those extra “Screen Options” that I had you set.
Write your title and the body of your announcement. Then scroll down and fill in the event information in the boxes labeled “Customize Your Event”.
Fill in the “excerpt” box with the smallest, most compact description of the event or even just some keywords. That’s what’s going to show on the front page summary of events.
Publish and voilá, you have created an event that shows on event page and on the side of each page of the site.
Youtube and Vimeo Videos
Just include the video link (the URL from the address bar) and the software will take care of displaying the video inside your post.

Caveats
Remember that everything you post is public (unless you’ve made it password protected or private) and available on the Internet. So, just like Facebook and other social networks, be cautious about what personal data you want to display. Language should comply with normal business etiquette.
